When we talk about Hotstar, we talk about the IPL or the Star Plus shows. But it’s not just that, the Disney owned streaming platform has much more to offer.
An app once advertised as an online platform for watching Star plus TV serials online has come a long way and has now become a serious contender among OTT platforms that creates original digital content.
Although you can watch great English content on Hotstar, we are not here to talk about them. We are here to talk about the rise of Indian Web Series industry and the contribution of Hotstar in it.
Hotstar has acknowledged the potential of Digital entertainment industry in India and has come up with few shows (Hotstar Specials) of its own to cater to the Indian audiences.
Here’s the list of All Indian Web Series created by Hotstar.
Latest Updated On: April 7, 2020
1. Special Ops
- Logline: A trial for the 2001 Parliament terror attack reveals that a 6th unidentified terrorist is associated with the assault. Himmat Singh and his agents are on a mission to track him down.
- Year: 2020
- Genre: Thriller
- Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Gautami Kapoor
Recently almost every OTT in India has released spy and crime thrillers based on real incidents from the past. Now that Hotstar has emerged as the main OTT player in the market, web series like Special ops have gained a lot of attention from the masses.
Hotstar’s all-new original web series Special ops follow the story of an intelligence office Himmat Singh who is determined to catch the mastermind involved in the 2001 Parliament attack.
I wouldn’t mark it as rewatch worthy but it is by far the best espionage series made in India after The Family Man and you should definitely add this to your watchlist today.
2. The Office
- Logline: Remake of famous British Sitcom of the same name.
- Year: 2019
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Gopal Dutt, Sayandeep Sengupta, Samridhi Dewan
If you watched the British or American version of this Sitcom, then probably you know how hilarious the show is. Hotstar has attempted to recreate the magic for the Indian audience by creating the desi version of ‘The Office’.
The story is very simple, it presents a 9 to 5 office scenario where the boss, Jagdeep Chadda tries to encourage his always bored employees. He wants to make everyone happy by being funny but unfortunately, no one in his office likes his lame jokes.
The show makes you laugh and you’ll love the chemistry of the characters. It a must-watch for all those who haven’t watched the original version. And for those who have watched the original version, you can still watch this one for all the ‘Desi fun’ it got.
3. Criminal Justice
Logline: Aditya wakes up to find the woman he had a one night stand with is dead. All the pieces of evidence point towards him, but he doesn’t have a clue how everything happened.
Genre: Crime, Mystery
Cast: Vikrant Massey, Pankaj Tripathi, Rucha Inamdar
Hotstar has gone all the way out on this web series in terms of the cinematography and the star cast. The show features famous Bollywood actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Vikrant Massey and Jackie Shroff. Criminal Justice is an adaptation from BBC series of the same name and promises to be a nail-biting murder mystery.
It’s the story of a guy named Aditya, an MBA student who helps his family run a cab service.
One day after dropping a girl, he realises she has left her phone so he drives all the way back to return it. She then insists him to share some drinks and they end up spending a steamy night together. After waking up Aditya finds out that the lady has been brutally killed. What’s worse is that all the evidence is against him and he doesn’t remember a thing.
The show is a fusion of Jail and Courtroom drama. The story is a bit slow but acting is top-notch. If you are into such type of dramas then it is worth watching.
Logline: Dr Mira and her family are held, hostages. To free her family all she has to do is kill her patient.
Cast: Ronit Roy, Tisca Chopra, Parvin Dabas
Another Hotstar Original inspired by a popular Isreali Web series of the same name. It’s the story of a well-acclaimed surgeon Dr Mira Anand who is held hostage along with her family.
The only way to save her family is to kill her patient on the operating table.
The patient is no common man but the chief minister of the state. But can Mira, an honest surgeon, agree to kill her patient? Every character of the story, be it the family members or the captors are dealing with their own issues which make the story multi-dimensional.
The Hotstar web series is compelling but has its shortcomings too. Overall the show is entertaining, just don’t watch it with too much expectation.
5. Out of Love
Logline: A story of a woman who becomes paranoid after finding out that her husband is having an affair with another woman.
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Cast: Rasika Dugal, Purab Kohli, Meenakshi Chaudhary
Yeah, this is also an adaptation of a BBC series called ‘Doctor Foster’. Hotstar has the means to come up with original stories of their own but they have on most cases prefered to use an Indian version of a popular foreign series, which is fine too if done correctly.
It is the story of Meera who is living a very happy life- a great job, a beautiful family and a loving husband. But things take a turn for worse when she finds a lipstick mark and a long hair on her husband’s clothes.
She begins to suspect every female associated with her husband. Her behaviour changes as she becomes more and more paranoid but tries to hide her emotions from everyone.
The acting of the main lead actress (Rasika Dugal) is phenomenal, her portrayal of different emotions will give you goosebumps. But the show somehow failed to create a powerful impact. Watch it if you find the story intriguing.
6. Mayanagari-City of Dreams
Logline: The show deals with dynasty politics, where two siblings are competing for ‘control’ in the aftermath of an assassination attempt on their father.
Genre: Political thriller
Cast: Priya Bapat, Siddharth Chandekar, Eijaz Khan
Since the previous four Hotstar Specials are the remakes of foreign web series, some of you might be thinking which web series inspired this one?
Well, fortunately, ‘Mayanagari’ is an all-original Hotstar web series.
Its a story of a powerful political family who rules Mumbai. Amay Rao Gaekwad is the leader of a powerful right-wing party in Maharashtra. He is shot by few gunmen that puts him in a Coma, leaving a hole in party leadership. Both of his children move forward to take his place causing a rivalry between the siblings.
The show’s filled with violence, drug and sex. One might say that they went a little overboard in depicting these things. It’s not a perfect show but still enjoyable.
7. As I’m suffering from Kadhal
- Logline: A heartwarming story about four couples and their romantic lives, who are finding it difficult to keep the spark alive.
- Year: 2017
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Arjunan, Dhanya Balakrishna, Abishek Joseph George
Love is not perfect, for some it brings a lot of happiness and for some it only brings pain. During a relationship, a couple goes through many different kind phases that directly impact their lives. A short note- ‘It’s a Tamil Web Series’.
It is the story of four couples figuring out the many meanings of modern-day love. Out of these four, one couple is divorced, next one is married but hates one another, other is in a live-in relationship and hates marriage and the last couple are love birds who are in “process” of getting married.
This Tamil web series shows modern and a bold approach in showcasing the happy and the sad sides of various kinds of relationships in a light, humorous manner. If you like this one, you can also see another list on ‘15 Best Tamil Web Series‘.
8. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai Take 2
Logline: The show revolves around the day to day life of an upper-class Gujarati family, the Sarabhais.
Cast: Satish Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Raghavan, Rupali
If you are a 90’s kid you might have seen Season 1 of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai on the Star One network. It was one of the most famous show at the time and people of all ages loved it. After 11 years since it’s first season ended, Hotstar picked the series up for a second season with 10 episodes.
For those who don’t know what the show’s about, it is the story of an upper-middle-class Gujarati family, The Sarabhais. The show takes you on the joy ride of bittersweet moments between the family members that’ll leave you laughing out loud. The Saas-Bahu quarrel, father-son bickering are the highlight of the show.
To understand the full scope of the story, you need to have the knowledge of the previous season which is also available on the Hotstar app. Those who have seen the first season, the second one will give you the feeling of nostalgia and those who haven’t watched any, you are missing something special.
Since now that Hotstar has teamed up with Disney+, we can expect good content coming out soon in the future. There are few more web series besides those in the list but they weren’t worth mentioning. If in future, a good show is released by Hotstar, we’ll be sure to update the list. Until then, you can share your views about the above-mentioned web series in the comment box.
