But I see some steps in the very right direction. As the web series culture is rapidly catching fame in India, a lot of online entertainment platforms are coming up with new horror web series to cater to the masses. And I must say, of the web series are great.

So, I decided why not make a list of scary web series and help people like me find some great horror stories from India.

Too tired to Read? Watch the entire list in video format.

1. Typewriter

  • Logline: A story of a group of friends who set out on a mission to capture a ghost residing in their neighbourhood’s.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Netflix
  • 5 episodes

Every one of us has shared and listened to ghost stories with friends and family. I still remember how excited I used to be whenever the topic of ghosts would come up. We even had a plan of what we’d do if we encounter one. This show somehow reminds me of those days.

The story follows a group of friends who are crazy about ghosts and wants to catch one. They have their eyes set on a spooky-looking villa, which they believe has a ghost living in it.

After a new family moves into that home, they feel it’s important to catch the ghost quickly before something bad happens. The series revolves around the past events that happened in the villa and its repercussion in the present story.

The horror web series has its own flaws. If you are watching it with an expectation of getting thrilled like ‘Conjuring’ or ‘Insidious’, then you will get a little disappointed.

Bottom line:

Story: The story is not unique, but stick to its roots for the most part which is its plus as well as minus point. It didn’t do anything stupid but didn’t do anything exciting either.
Acting: Most of the main cast comprises of children and they did quite well on their part. Adults too were great in their performances.
Scare Level: 3.5/5
Rewatch Worthy: Maybe
CAST: Palomi Ghosh, Purab Kohli, Samir Kochhar, Aarna Sharma

2.Gehraiyaan

  • Logline: A romantic, horror thriller that revolves around the life of a girl who is haunted by the demons of her past.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: Viu
  • 10 episodes

Who doesn’t love romance iced on top of a horror story? Vikram Bhatt, the king of horror movies in Bollywood is backing this project and has picked up the perfect couple from the daily soap, Vatsal Seth and Sanjeeda Sheikh.

The story revolves around Reyna, a surgeon, who returns to work after a year’s break. But her superiors are worried that the trauma from her past might affect her work. The story keeps you guessing, what so horrible happened in her past?

On the other side, the story follows her relationship with two guys- one is her best friend from hospital and other is her hot mysterious neighbour.

The series has those scary moments that will give you chills. If you’re a fan of Vikram Bhatt’s work and the two main leads, I am sure you’ll like it.

Bottom line:

Story: I have but one problem with the show and that is its length. The web series is ten episodes long which drags the plot. Seven episodes would have been perfect to present the story gracefully.
Acting: On the acting front all the actors have done a great job, especially the main actress, her emotions are top-notch.
Scare Level: 3.5/5
Rewatch Worthy: Yes
CAST: Vatsal Seth, Meherzan Mazd, Sanjeeda Sheikh

3. Bhram

  • Logline: Alisha usually sees a girl. At first, she thinks it’s just hallucination but later finds out that same girl died 20 years ago.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Zee5
  • 8 episodes

The star of this series, Kalki Koechlin is one of the finest actresses in the Indian entertainment industry and her acting in ‘Bhram’ just proves that fact. Zee5 has gone all the way out to get the best actress and the best location for their horror web series.

It is the story of Alisha Khanna ( Kalki) who is an author by profession. Her life takes a 360′ turn after she gets into a car crash. To mellow things down in her life she moves to her sister’s house in Shimla. However, upon reaching there, she starts seeing a girl.

At first, she ignores everything, thinking it as mere hallucinations, but upon research, she finds that the girl she saw had died 20 years ago. As Alisha’s interaction increases with that girl, she becomes inquisitive about her past and the reason for her death.

To put it all together, Bhram is an ideal content for binge-watching, which one has to watch if they love a got mystery-horror story.

Bottom line:

Story: This web series is not for everyone. Some just want to see one horror scene after another, whereas this show is more focused on the psychological impact of seeing paranormal stuff.
Acting: Kalki’s performance is the life of this show, without it, it would be a subpar horror web series.
Scare Level: 3/5
Rewatch Worthy: Yes
CAST: Kalki Koechlin, Bhumika Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Eijas Khan

4. Ghoul

  • Logline: A mysterious prisoner is brought to a remote military camp for interrogation. But things get wild when he summons a demon from Arabic folklore and start killing people.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Netflix
  • 3 episodes

The story is based in near-future India that has an authoritarian power system. Ghoul is not a typical ghost story but deals with an actual monster of the Arabian folklore and it is believed that he can read a person’s mind and take shape of any person he eats.

The show’s about a female army officer Nida Rahim (Radhika), who works as an interrogator in the remote military centre where high profile criminals are brought for interrogation.

One such day, a mysterious prisoner is brought in the facility. The troubles start when that prisoner summons a Ghoul and it starts killing everybody.

Ghoul’s main lead, Radhika Apte is often called as the ‘foster child’ of Netflix, because of her appearances in so many Netflix originals. She deserves everything she has earned because of her amazing acting.

Bottom line:

Story: The story is unique and has just 3 episodes. So, it doesn’t try to do too many things at once, which is good. It is a treat for horror genre lovers.

Acting: Every actor knew what they were doing. You don’t need sound to tell what’s going on in the story, their facial expressions are enough.

Scare Level: 4.0/5

Rewatch Worthy: Maybe

CAST: Radhika Apte, Manav Kaul, S. M. Zaheer

5. Parchhayee

  • Logline: A show based on short horror stories written by famous writer Ruskin Bond. Every episode featuring a different story.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Zee5
  • 12 episodes

I personally am a huge fan of Ruskin Bond. And honestly, who isn’t? We all have studies his work in school and I am sure some of you might even remember the ‘Chapter’s Name and story’. But that’s just fraction of his work.

Mr Bond has written hundreds of poems and stories. The horror web series ‘Parchhayee’ is a collection of horror stories written by him with every episode dealing with a different scary story.

He, however, wrote these short stories to entertain children, so the level of horror is not that high but that doesn’t mean they aren’t scary at all. Some of the episodes in the show will send shivers down your spine.

Bottom line:

Story: Since the stories were written in the 70s and 80s, they have a classic feel to them. Plus these stories were made keeping children in mind, so the whole web series can be watched with family.
Acting: With every episode being a different story, there are a lot of people on this show. Overall the level of acting is satisfactory throughout the series.
Scare Level: 2.0/5
Rewatch Worthy: Yes
CAST: Kabir Sajid, Farida Jalal, Sarah Jane Dias, Swanand Kirkire

6. Beetal

  • Logline:  What happens when a dead British colonizer wakes from the dead and strive to take revenge with his dead army.
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Netflix

Coming from Shahrukh Khan’s production house Red Chillies Entertainment, Beetal is a new web series from Netflix starring Ahaana Kumra and Vineet Kumar Singh.

This fictional horror story sets up in a remote village where an undead East India Company Officer plans revenge by developing his army of the dead or zombies. On the contrary modern army forces loaded with modern ammunition try to stop these supernatural forces.

Clearly a new concept in the Indian OTT platform backed by strong direction and storyline. Although I felt that the dead army could have been more horrifying still it is a definite watch for the lovers of the horror genre.

Bottom line:

Story: Even though this horror web series was made by such a big production house and was streamed by biggest OTT platform, it failed to reach the expectation.
Acting: A well balanced cast with long acting experience was the plus point of this show..
Scare Level: 3.0/5
Rewatch Worthy: Maybe
Cast: Vineet Kumar, Aahana Kumra, Suchitra Pillai

7. Simran

  • Logline: An architect’s curiosity leads her to the mysterious area in an old fort that turns her life upside down.
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Primeflix
  • 8 Episodes

Known for its erotic and bold content Primeflix recently released a new horror web series. As it is a new player in the OTT world so its recommended to keep your expectations on the lower side.

A group of friends decides to go on a road trip to Rudrapur. Simran, one of the group members is fascinated by the beauty of the Rudra Fort and her desire to explore the Fort leads her to a closed-door that was never supposed to open.

A mix of horror and eroticism. Highly recommended for people who loved horror web series like Ragini MMS.

Bottom line:

Story: Just average for a Horror Crime web series.
Acting: Primeflix signed some recognizable faces from Indian TV shows but yet the direction and story writing couldn’t bring the best out of the characters.
Scare Level: 2.5/5
Rewatch Worthy: No
Cast: Akanksha Puri, Nibedita Pal, Sweety Walia, Kriti Verma

8. Ragini MMS Returns

  • Logline: A story about a college-going girl, Ragini, her friends and a ghost who threatens to kill her victims if they get laid.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: ALT Balaji
  • 12 episodes

Most of you have heard this name from the movie ‘Ragini MMS 2’ starring Sunny Leone. It is a horror movie which did quite well at the box office. To mint more money from the Ragini MMS franchise, Alt Balaji came up with a horror web series called ‘Ragini MMS Returns’.

On thing that ALT Balaji has mastered over the years is the art of turning anything into sexy, even ghost stories. There’s a ghost in this show that threatens to kill her victims if they get laid.

That’s right, for getting laid. But don’t think a threat from a dead person will stop our heroes from doing stuff.

The story is about a college-going girl, Ragini and her friends who are being hunted down by the ghost for the reason I mentioned above.

The writers have openly shown girl locker room talk which seems realistic. The show is flooded with seductive scenes and the moments of horror are OK too.

Bottom line:

Story: This is not a story for everyone. Some people might not even call it a horror story because of the level of profanity in it. But despite all the flaws, it has certain moments that are spine-chilling.
Acting: Lead male actor requires maturity, other than that everyone performed nicely.
Scare Level: 2.5/5
Rewatch Worthy: No
CAST: Karishma Sharma, Siddharth Gupta, Nishant Malkani, Dilnaz Irani

9.Tantra

  • Logline: A woman in her jealousy set out to ruin her own family members with the help of black magic.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: MX Player
  • 33 episodes

Another horror-thriller created by Vikram Bhatt, Tantra is a compelling drama showing the dangerous powers of dark magic. Unlike any other on this list, Tantra dives into the taboo topic of evil occult and devil-worshipping.

It may be bizarre but black magic has always been a part of Indian culture. People do crazy things to succeed in life or to take revenge from somebody.

Tantra is one such story of a woman who detests the fact that her rich father-in-law hands the rein of the family company to her husband’s younger brother.

To get everything for her own, the lady vows to destroy her brother-in-law and his family. With the help of an ‘evil Tantrik’, she starts to wreak havoc on the family.

Bottom line:

Story: The web series is the odd one in this list. It’s more like a TV Drama that you have been watching for years with your mom. But it doesn’t drag story like those daily soaps. However, it does have some cliched moments like those on TV.
Acting: The show has a pretty big cast with main characters doing their part perfectly and side characters are applaudable.
Scare Level: 2.0/5
Rewatch Worthy: No
CAST: Aditi Arya, Vidur Anand, Salina Prakash, Karim Hajee

10. Ghost Leela

  • Logline: A story of a woman who falls for a guy who’s not alive.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Primeflix
  • 4 episodes

Since all the major OTT platforms are not seriously pursuing the horror genre, Primefilx is trying hard to fill the gap with its content. Ghost Leela is a decent attempt at capturing this market.

The story revolves around Suzanne who is love with a guy who’s not alive. On top of that, there is a guy who wants to kill her for some ritual. Suzanne’s only hope is her friend Arjun who has a crush on her and want to save her from all dangers at all cost.

Bottom line:

Story: The story is not unique but definitely new for Hindi horror web series lovers.
Acting: Since most of the cast is fresh talents, their work is worth praising.
Scare Level: 3.0/5
Rewatch Worthy: No
CAST: Ankush Bhat, Arjun Manhas, Ashwini Khairnar

11. The Last Night

  • Logline: Haunted by a vengeful soal, a woman vows to do everything to save her family.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Primeflix
  • 4 episodes

A family moves into a new home and becomes the prey of a vengeful spirit. The reason for this anger is that the husband of the family and the spirit had a mysterious past. To save her family, the wife decides to go up against the ghost.

After that, the whole story revolves around the clash between the spirit and wife. You’ll definitely enjoy this fight and might get a few laughs out of it too.

Bottom line:

Story: The story is a usual good vs evil but lacks the intensity.
Acting: All the actors performed well.
Scare Level: 2.5/5
Rewatch Worthy: No
CAST: Amit Pandey, Arjun Manhas, Dhruvin Sangral

I hope you liked the article. If so, don’t forget to share it with friends. And if you think there’s something wrong in it or I missed any good web series, please mention it in the comment box.
Thank you.
