Maharashtra is undoubtedly the entertainment state of India. It is where we saw the rise of the Hindi movie industry AKA Bollywood. But that is not all, Maharashtra is much more than Bollywood.

Marathi people are one of the proudest people in India. They love their culture and their mother language which is not Hindi but Marathi. Mumbai may have become the Mecca of the Hindi entertainment industry but it is still very much connected to its roots. That is the reason why Marathi web series and movies are very popular in the state and across the nation.

With the arrival of OTT platforms, the Marathi entertainment industry has also got an opportunity to flex its muscles in the digital space. In such a short time a lot of Marathi web series have made a name for themselves and are bringing out quality content.

In this post, I’ll be putting out my top picks for the “10 Best Marathi Web Series” created till now. So without further ado lets get started.

1. Gondya Ala re

  • Logline: A real story about the Marathi uprising against the British oppression in the year 1897.
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Year: 2019
  • Genre: Action, Historical Thriller
  • Cast: Bhushan Pradhan, Kshitish Date, Shivraj Vaichal, Anand Ingale

One thing that is really missing in the Indian web series industry is the lack of high budget projects. This is why ‘Gondya Ala re’ is an important show for not only Marathi but the overall web series industry. Set in 1897, the web series tries to recreate the Marathi uprising to fight British oppression.

At that time the state of Maharashtra suffered bubonic plague and W. C. Rand, a British officer was appointed to eradicate the plague. He ordered his men to forcefully entry into houses and examine residents including women. Chaphekar brothers rebelled against such inhumanity and assassinated Rand and his accomplice. ‘Gondya Ala Re’ was their war cry!

The web series did a really good job of showing the lesser-known history of our country and the situation of India under British rule. A must watch for history drama buffs.

2. Shala

  • Logline:  A famous Marathi tale of 3 school friends who are facing the ups and downs of school life.

Based on an award-winning novel by Milind Bokil, “Shala” or school is a story of four friends who are at the threshold of their teenage years in an Indian school.

This web series will take you back to the days when the school used to be the adda for daily gathering, fun, play, and affection. It is a story of love, of circumstance, of passion, friendship, and freedom and is a must-watch for anyone who lost his first love in school.

The web series will make you reminisce about your school days and all the fun times you had. The whole show is one fun ride and I’ll highly recommend you to watch it as soon as possible.

Released exactly one year ago Striling Pulling was the first Marathi web series that broke the stereotypes and expressed some bold views of life from a woman’s perspective.

This 6 episode Marathi web series orbits around three female protagonists Pallavi, Priya, and Archana. Though the main plot of the story is clear in the first ten minutes of the first episode, the story is filled with enough plot twists to keep you entertained.

Bold storytelling, an energetic star cast, ending each episode on suspense, loads of comedy in the last 2 episodes are some of the reasons you might consider watching this Marathi web series.

Those who don’t get what FOMO means, it’s a short form for ‘Fear Of Missing Out‘. Many people around us go through the feeling of being left out and become depressed. This Marathi web series is quite relatable in today’s generation. The story tries to show a positive way of dealing with this social anxiety.

He tries very hard to fit in with everybody but ends up feeling more and more alienated. But things change when he meets Revathi who is suffering from a similar situation. They decide to do something about their problem and the story takes a hilarious turn.

We have seen police in a very stereotypical way as is fed to us by Bollywood. Either they really corrupt or they are superhumans. But that one-dimensional version of police is being challenged by newer movies and web series.

Pandu shows policemen as simple humans who are imperfect, yet sensitive and practical. Pandu tries to show the real face of Mumbai police to its audience. The story is light-hearted, but at the same time it doesn’t hold back on the action of everything goes around in the Mumbai city.

Well, the name of this OTT platform seems like a word stolen from Amazon Prime and other from Netflix but that is not the topic of our discussion. It is a new platform launched in Sept 2019, and Bhadkhau is one of their first offerings.

The story revolves around Santya, a guy who is newly married and is very excited about his honeymoon night. But all his excitement goes down the drain when his family receives an envelope as a wedding gift, Rs 500 currency note which is torn in the center and has “BHADKHAU” written on it. Bhadkhau loosely translates to ‘a person who subsists upon earnings obtained by prostitutes‘.

Though only a few directors have been able to impress me in the horror web series genre, its quite good to see regional directors coming up with this type of content.

There isn’t much about the story to talk about as it is a simple horror story and I wouldn’t like to spoil it in the first place.
