A poster image describing that this post is about 15 must watch tamil web series.

There’s no denying that Tamil movies are loved by every Indian. I personally am a huge fan of South Indian Cinema. They proudly represent South Indian traditions and culture.

The rise of the Tamil entertainment industry can be realized by the fact that movies like 2.0, Kabali, Bigil etc. are earning more than some of highly rated Bollywood movies.

But today I am not here to talk about movies. In this post, I’ll be discussing my new found love for Tamil Web Series. Since the growth of OTT Platforms in India, we have seen a rise in the production of web series across different languages.

Although the total number of web series made in Tamil is less, the quality of content created is really high. I haven’t watched all the shows myself. I am making this post with the help of my friend who has probably seen every Tamil web series.

So, here’s the list of ’15 Best Tamil Web Series’. I hope you’ll like it.

We are living in a world surrounded by technology. In our day to day work, we have become dependent on it. But is this over-dependence a good thing? Fingertip is a Tamil web series that shows the dark side of technology.

The show comprises of five episodes titled Greed, Rage, Betrayal, Lust, and Vengeance, respectively. Each episode deals with a new story with different emotions. The web series shows how apps like Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp can be used to ruin someone’s life.

The web series can be used as a medium to aware people of the dark side of technology and how one should not be too open on social media.

2. Memories

  • Logline: A TV anchor gets a superpower of accessing a dead person’s memory by touching it. He decides to use his powers to help Police solve crime cases.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Drama, Thriller
  • Cast: Priyal Gor, Madan Joshi, Surleen Kaur

Each web series on this list carry a great storyline and for me, Memories web series is the best one coming from Viu. Viu has set big plans for the growth of Tamil web series industry as it plans to release at least 100 web series before 2021.

The story revolves around a renowned TV journalist, Siddharth. He has the power to read dead people’s mind by touching them. He helps police solve difficult cases and murder mysteries. But his life comes under a threat when gets involved in a case of a girl who is in a coma.

Siddharth played by Rohit Roy fits perfectly for the role of a serious TV journalist. This popular psychological thriller will keep you at the edge of your seat at all time.

3. Auto Shankar

  • Logline: A story based on the life of an infamous serial killer named Shankar, who shook Madras city in the ‘80s.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Cast: Arjun Chidambaram, Rajesh Dev, Praveen Koreografia

There are many stories of serial killers in our country. But very few became as famous as the story of Shankar. That’s the reason why Zee5 picked it up and decided to make a web series on it.

Auto Shankar is a Tamil web series made on the life of a notorious serial killer ‘Shankar’ who was one of the most feared man in the entire Madras (Chennai) city in the ’80s. The show dives in his childhood, his sociopathic tendencies, his links to corrupt politicians and police and of course the killings.

One might say that it is wrong to glorify a mass murderer by making a web series on him, but every story has a right to be told and I feel that our public is mature enough to distinguish between what’s right or wrong.

4. Nila Nila Odi Vaa

  • Logline: Om is in love with a vampire and will do anything to turn her back to normal. But angry with this relationship, both vampires and humans try to hunt the couple down.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Viu
  • Genre: Supernatural, Romance
  • Cast: Sunaina, Ashwin Kakumanu, Anupama Kumar

I am a very big fan of the ‘supernatural’ genre shows. So when I heard about this Tamil web series, I instantly jumped into watching it and I am quite satisfied with what I saw.

It’s a story of a guy named Om who falls in love with a girl called Nila. Nila is a vampire and despite knowing her true identity Om doesn’t run away, rather decides to do anything to make her a human again. But things aren’t very easy for both of them. Other vampires don’t like their relationship, also, there are some humans called slayers who hunt down vampires and Nila is their target.

We follow Om and Nila on their quest to get a better life. The show’s filled with love, romance, action and a whole lot of vampires. I’ll highly recommend you to give it a shot.

5. Postman

  • Logline: Story of a postman who decides to deliver 23-year-old letters that he couldn’t deliver at that time because of an accident that left him in a Coma.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Drama
  • Cast: Munishkanth, Keerthi Pandian.

“Postman” web series will take you back to the good old days when people eagerly waited for a postman’s visit. I ran into watching this just after watching the trailer as the main plot looked so intriguing.

‘Postman’ is a Tamil web series revolving around the life of a postman named Raja. Raja had a terrible accident that left him in a Coma for 23 years. After waking up he decides to deliver the letters he was given 23 years back. Raja and his daughter Rajni are now committed to delivering the undelivered letters. The web series shows how significant the letters are to its recipients and how a postman’s unfinished duty can lead to complications in one’s life.

I won’t lie, I watched the entire series in one go because, first, it had just six episodes and second the suspense was too much for me.

6. American Mappillai

  • Logline: Ganesh is a commitmentphobe, to make his nagging father top asking him to get married her lies about him being gay.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Drama, Comedy
  • Cast: Raja Krishnamoorthy, Arjun Chidambaram, Namita Krishnamurthy

While I haven’t seen many movies discussing social taboos, streaming platforms like Zee5 are working on breaking the stereotypes with their web series.

Ganesh is a guy who is constantly nagged by his father to get married but he always tries to avoid the situation. Then he comes out with a hilarious idea and tells his family that he’s gay.

Each episode is named after a colour which is attached to the emotion of the episode. A perfect series for binge-watching.

7. Vella Raja

  • Logline: A story of a battle between a cop and a drug lord where both struggles to hunt each other down.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
  • Cast: Abi, Akash, Yuthan Balaji

When I first watched Vella Raja, I got the feels of ‘Sacred Games’. Both stories revolve around a powerful crime boss who has done some serious unlawful activities and both stories have an honest police officer who wants to hunt him down.

Vella Raja is the story of Deva, a very powerful Druglord who is feared by even the Police. But things change with the entry of Theresa, who is a brave and honest police officer that specialises in handling serious cases.

A battle is then started between Deva and Theresa that leads to lots of action, suspense and excitement. If you like thrillers, ‘Vella Raja’ will not disappoint you.

8. Kallachirippu

  • Logline: A woman stabs her husband to death, then tries to cover up the mess with the help of her boyfriend.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Cast: Rajalakshmi, Amrutha Srinivasan, Vikas

Kallachirippu tries to highlight a very important matter of forced marriages of girls by their parents. Arranged marriages are still very prevalent in India and the choice of a girl hardly mean anything. Marrying your daughter off to a stranger doesn’t always work well as thought by the parents.

The series follows the life of a young girl Mahati who is forcefully married by her family. The newly married Mahati gets into an argument with her husband and stabs him to death in an act of self-defence. She then calls her boyfriend to cover up the situation. This sets off a chain of events that drags everyone related to the newly married couple in this mess.

The show makes you think who was really at fault that the things end up this way. Is it the fault of Mahati or her family or her husband?

9. As I’m suffering from Kadhal

  • Logline: A heartwarming story about four couples and their romantic lives, who are finding it difficult to keep the spark alive.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: Hotstar
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Cast: Arjunan, Dhanya Balakrishna, Abishek Joseph George

Love is not perfect, for some it brings a lot of happiness and for some it only brings pain. During a relationship, a couple goes through many different kind phases that directly impact their lives.

It is the story of four couples figuring out the many meanings of modern-day love. Out of these four, one couple is divorced, next one is married but hates one another, other is in a live-in relationship and hates marriage and the last couple are love birds who are in “process” of getting married.

This Tamil web series shows modern and a bold approach in showcasing the happy and the sad sides of various kinds of relationships in a light, humorous manner.

10. Iru Dhuruvam

  • Logline: A nine-episode mini web series based on serial killings in the city of Chennai. The story filled with investigation, detection and suspense.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Sony liv
  • Genre: Suspense, Crime
  • Cast: Nandaa, Abdool, Sebastin Antony, Abhirami Iyer, Jiva Ravi, Anisha, Ajit Koshy

Iru Dhuruvam is a story based on serial killing mixed with humour, emotions, action and mind games. After Auto Shankar, it is the second series in the list that is based on the premise of serial killings.

Iru Dhuruvam focuses on the action of two-man leads. A psychopath killer who leaves a verse from the Thirukkural and a video in the victim’s phone each time he commits a crime and a dedicated police officer who is working hard to nab him.

You will surely enjoy antagonist’s part of the story as it is backed with intriguing dialogues. All in all the show delivers a thrilling time buster.

11. Door no. 403

  • Logline: Harish and Sam are roommates but Harish wants to move in with his girlfriend Haritha. The web series shows the eventful lives of these people after they all start living together.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Viu
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Cast: Ena Friedrich, Gokul Anand, Pooja Devariya

It is said that friends are the second family. They tease you, support you and most importantly they love you. Door No. 403 is that kind of a web series that shows the beauty of friendship with all its flaws.

It is the story of a guy who after getting his first movie released is invited to do an interview. He is then asked ten questions and the answer to each question lies with the time he spent with his friends and the crazy things they did together.

It’s a nice funny Tamil web series that will warm your heart and will make you feel good. You can sit back with your friends and watch it with them.

12. F*ck Buddies

  • Logline: A story of two friends who decide to take their friendship one step higher.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: MX Player
  • Genre: Drama
  • Cast: Aarti, Arjun, Jaytesh Calpakkam

I don’t think there is anything to explain about the series as the name reveals it all. For a Tamil web series, it is a something new but globally many stories have been made on this premise, ‘Friends with Benefits’ being one of the most popular.

The story attempts to bold and doesn’t shy away from talking about sex. The main characters of the story, Jiah and Jay portray the new generation of Indian millennials who are confident, independent and unapologetic.

It’s a great series to watch if you are looking for some light-hearted drama. If you like this type of shows, watch my other post on ‘20 Best Adult Web Series’.

13. Livin’

  • Logline: A story about the roller-coaster life of a bunch of crazy friends living together.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: Put Chutney
  • Genre: Comedy, Romance
  • Cast: Kanna Ravi, Amrutha Srinivasan, Prasanth Oliver

Many people have started to say that marriage is a dying institution. Future generations will just prefer to stay together without any big commitments. You can see the change happening at present too, the number of live-in relationships have increased exponentially.

This Tamil web series is based on a couple in a live-in relationship and the challenging situations they face while living together. Harish and Haritha are in a live-in relationship and share their apartment with Harish’s friend Sam.

It is a coming of age story where the three main characters confront complicated situations and grow mature as the time passes. Livin’ tries to present an outlook on the relationships a human being forms outside their family.

14. Made in Heaven

  • Logline: A story of two people running a wedding planning business for the uber-rich. The series tries to show the dark side of the so-called rich society.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Genre: Drama, Romance
  • Cast: Arjun Mathur, Sibhita Dhulipala, Jim Sarbh, Kalki Koechin

This is not really a Tamil web series. It is a Tamil dubbed version of a Hindi web series on Amazon Prime. But I still added it to the list because I felt that this is one of those stories that one can’t miss.

It is a story of two business partners Karan and Tara, who run ‘Made in
Heaven’, a wedding planning company that works exclusively for super-rich clients. They have to deal with self-centred and egoistic people on a daily basis and their personal lives are also not very great. When Karan has a lot of debt on his head, Tara is finding it difficult to adjust in the rich sophisticated lifestyle after marrying a billionaire.

The series is filled with subtle messages which are easy to relate like the message that money is not the answer to everything.

15. Breathe

  • Logline: A story of a father who decides to take drastic measures to save his dying kid.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
  • Cast: Madhavan, Amit Sadh, Sapna Pabbi

Amazon Prime’s Breathe is still one of the best web series ever made in India. Like ‘Made in Heaven’ it is also not created in Tamil but dubbed in it. It may not be a Tamil web series by it has a Tamil lead actor, R Madhvan and he has done an amazing job.

Breathe is a story of a guy named Danny and his son Josh who is suffering from serious lung disease and need a transplant. Josh is number four on the list to get a new lung, but it will be too late till his turn comes. So Danny decides to take drastic measures and decides to kill all three patients before Josh in the donor’s line to save his son.

The story is very powerful, Madhvan has done great acting along with all the other cast, the screenplay is tight and dialogue delivery is top-notch. Perfect for binge-watching.

This sums up my list of the 15 Best Tamil Web Series. Since I am new to the world of Tamil web series, this is the best list I could come up with at this time. If I missed some great web series, please mention it in the comment box. If you liked the content then don’t forget to share it with friends.
Thank you.
