Month: April 2020

The Raikar Case

  • Logline: A murder mystery where the family members of the deceased are the main suspects.
  • Release date: 9 April 2020
  • Platform: Voot
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Cast: Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Karan Kapoor, Ashwini Bhave

The year 2020 marks as the year where Voot has decided that it’s gonna actively participate in digital content creation. After the success of ‘Asur’, Voot is back again with another thriller web series.

The story starts with Tarun Naik Raikar jumping off a cliff and falling to his death. Soon after SP John Pereira arrives and claims that it is not a suicide but a murder. Thus starts the investigation which slowly unfolds the secrets of Tarun’s family making them the main suspects in his murder case.

The story had a lot of potential but has some loopholes that no one can ignore. The acting is the strong point of this latest web series. Also, Season 1 ended on a halfway note, hinting that there’ll be a Season 2 in the future.

Who’s Your Daddy?

  • Logline: Tidda’s curiosity about knowing his mother’s identity reveals disturbing facts about his father Soggy.
  • Release date: 2 April 2020
  • Platform: Alt Balaji
  • Genre: Adult comedy
  • Cast: Harsh Beniwal, Rahul Dev, Anveshi Jain

Alt Balaji and Zee5 have been doing a lot of collaborations lately and one of them is this. An adult comedy featuring one of the most successful YouTubers, Harsh Beniwal and Gandii Baat starrer Anveshi Jain.

Tidda wants to know the truth about his birth mother from his father, Soggy. So Soggy decides to take Tidda in the flashback to 2002, at the time when Soggy used to sell ‘Porn DVDs’ and he and his father (Rahul Dev) were very popular among the ladies of posh Delhi till everything came crashing down. After listing to the story, Tidda gets more confused and becomes unsure of Soggy being his real father.

It’s just an adult comedy, so don’t go on expecting some high-level storyline. Just watch it if you want to have silly laughs on lewd jokes.

Month: March 2020

Taj Mahal 1989

  • Logline: A compilation of 4 love stories set in the early ’90s.
  • Release date: 25 March 2020
  • Platform: Netflix
  • Genre: Romance, Drama
  • Cast: Neeraj Kabi, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Danish Husain

This Netflix web series aims to bring forth love stories from a time when there weren’t any cell phones and the internet. A time when letters and face to face interactions used to do the trick.

Taj Mahal 1989 is the story of seven odd people of different age groups and different backgrounds trying to understand love and relationships.

The web series did try it best to present a story that has all the elements of that time but couldn’t hold the overall story together strongly.

Naked

  • Logline: Seductive killer or innocent victim? A murder mystery like no other.
  • Release date: 24 March 2020
  • Platform: MX Player
  • Genre: Drama, Thriller
  • Cast:  Suparna Moitra, Aryamann Seth

Not the best thriller out there but still a great attempt by MX Player in exploring different genres. ‘Naked’ is a web series that tries to be sensual and mysterious at the same time and does a decent job of doing that.

The story starts with the murder of a wealthy businessman and the only suspect is Natasha, a famous pornstar who was at the scene with him. Now it’s the job of Suraj Kadam, a cop to find out the truth. His search brings him closer to Natasha, he tries hard to keep his feelings aside because he knows that she might be the real murder.

If you looking for a web series that’s neither too simple nor too serious ( if you know what I mean) than ‘Naked’ is a good choice for you to opt.

State of Siege 26/11

  • Logline: A detailed depiction of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.
  • Release Date: 20 Mar 2020
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Genre: Action

Based on the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, this web series is adapted from the book Black Tornado: The Three Sieges of Mumbai 26/11 by Sandeep Unnithan.

This new web series is an account of the rescue operations performed during the attack. The show focuses more on the commandos and task forces involved rather than the victims and the trauma caused by the attack.

This 8 episode mini web series celebrates the heroic efforts of the courageous Indian soldiers who played their part in bringing the terrorists down.

SHE

  • Logline: An undercover female constable is given the task of exposing a drug ring for which she has to use every arsenal at her disposal.
  • Release date: 20 March 2020
  • Platform: Netflix
  • Genre: Crime, Drama
  • Cast: Aditi Sudhir Pohankar, Vijay Varma, Vishwas Kini

Netflix has teamed up with Bollywood’s famous director Imtiaz Ali to bring a web series called ‘She’ that focuses on showing empowered women of the 21st century.

The story revolves around Bhumi Pardesi, a married policewoman who is belittled all the time, both at home and job. This all changes when she is given the chance to go undercover and expose a drug ring. She realizes the power of her sexuality and what can she achieve by using it.

The web series projected itself as a woman-centric empowering story but somewhere along the line forgot what was the main objective of the story in the first place.

Special Ops

  • Logline: A trial for the 2001 Parliament terror attach reveals a 6th unidentified terrorist is associated with the assault. Himmat Singh and his agents are on a mission to track him down.
  • Release date: 17 March 2020
  • Platform: Hotstar
  • Genre: Thriller, Comedy
  • Cast:  Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Gautami Kapoor

Recently almost every OTT platform in India has released spy and crime thrillers based on real incidents from the past. Now that Hotstar has emerged as the main OTT player in the market, web series like Special ops have gained a lot of attention from the masses.

Hotstar’s all-new original web series Special ops follow the story of an intelligence office Himmat Singh who is determined to catch the mastermind involved in the 2001 Parliament attack.

I wouldn’t mark it as rewatch worthy but it is by far the best espionage series made in India after The Family Man and you should definitely add this to your watchlist today.

Samantar

  • Logline: A story of a guy who goes on a journey to find the person who shares the same fate as him.
  • Release Date: 13 March 2020
  • Platform:  MX Player
  • Genre: Thriller, Mystery
  • Cast:  Nitish Bharadwaj, Krishna Bharadwaj, Swwapnil Joshi

One of the latest addition to the MX Player Originals series is Samantar. A story shrouded in mystery so much so that every scene is nail-biting. In this world where everyone’s live different fates, what will you do if you find someone out shares the same fate as you? Well, that’s the premise of this story.

Kumar is frustrated with his life. Everything is going against his will. His close friend, Sharad takes him to a renowned fortune teller who tells Kumar that there exists a person who shares the same fate as him. Plus he’s older than Kumar so he has lived through what Kumar is dealing with right now. To find real answers, Kumar decides to go in search of that person and what follows is the plot of the series.

The story is gripping and always keeps you hooked at all times. The acting is phenomenal and characters seem very relatable. Definitely worth your time.

Mentalhood

  • Logline: Six different mothers discussing similar parenting problems.
  • Release date: 11 March 2020
  • Platform: Alt Balaji
  • Genre: Slice of Life
  • Cast: Karisma Kapoor, Sandhya Mridul, Tillotama Shome, Sanjay Suri

This latest web series from ALt Balaji marks the debut of Karishma Kapoor in digital series. The series stars some popular names from the Industry like Sanjay Suri and Sandhya Mridul.

Mentalhood casts Karishma Kapoor as Meira Sharma, former Miss Kanpur who had to give up on her modeling career to bring up her Kids. After moving to Mumbai, Meira gets associated with other mothers of her age who discuss the idea of parenting, its challenges, and solutions.

A light-hearted Indian Drama inclined towards the methods of parenting. One of the few clean Alt Balaji Series that you can watch with your parents or children.

Asur

  • Logline: Two forensic experts solving murder mysteries of a serial killer who kills for his religious belief.
  • Release Date: 2 March 2020
  • Platform: Voot
  • Genre: Crime Thriller
  • Cast:  Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti, Riddhi Dogra

This recent crime thriller by Voot has left the Indian audience stunned. Arshad Warsi making his web series debut in the best way possible. He acts as Dhananjay Rajput, a CBI officer who has been accused of his wife’s murder. The only man willing to help him is Nikhil Nair, a forensic expert.

Soon Nikhil finds himself entangled with mysterious serial killings and the narrative of a high IQ serial killer kicks in.

The title has been justified to its best. The mythological theme, suspense, and the murder mysteries fuse to make one of the best latest web series.

Month: February 2020

It happened in Calcutta

In happened in Calcutta is Alt Balaji’s latest attempt at making an epic period drama. The show will give you the vibes of Indian Television dramas.

The story revolves around Ronobir Chatterjee and Kusum Ganguly. Both meet at a medical college in 1962. Ronobir is a playboy whereas Kusum is a pure nerd. The two become close to each other but soon get apart. Then after 10 years, old feelings ignite again as both meet again during the 1971 Indo-Pak war as doctors.

This latest web series has many flaws and does not live up to expectations. Acting is mediocre and the story lacks logic. Bur if you like Indian soap dramas then maybe you’ll find this show likable.

It is a story of two ambitious brothers who come to Mumbai hoping to achieve big things. The story shows their rise from living on the streets to becoming the biggest stockbroker in Mumbai.

After Alt Balaji’s Bose Dead or Alive, the second piece of historical storytelling has been just released by Amazon Prime depicting the story of the Indian National Army’s struggle in the second world war.

The web series highlights the overlooked chapters of the Indian Army while the story develops around Lieutenant Sodhi and his lost love. The story is well depicted in two timelines, the World War II-era, and mid-90s with a blend of CGI and archived real footage.

This five-part mini web series on Amazon prime will take you on a ride of intense patriotism, calamitous flashbacks, and a disheartening love story.

Never Kiss Your Best Friend

Based on a book of the same name by Sumrit Shahi, Never Kiss Your Girlfriend is the latest rom-com web series that streams on Zee5.

Starring popular faces from Indian TV dramas like Nakuul Mehta and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi the show explores the odds of love among best friends.

The web series sets in plot two best friends Tanie and Sumer who haven’t seen each other for the past five years. No doubt the show has an appealing title but it is quite misleading and doesn’t justify much about the show.

The show is a lot about friendship than two friends falling for each other. The protagonists can be seen supporting each other in their respective love affairs and family issues and there are no signs of love developing between them in the first 5 episodes.

Apart from best friends in love syndrome, the show deals with peer pressure, drugs, and the idea or open relationship.

The story revolves around a military lawyer, Major Monika Mehra, who is ordered to investigate a case involving the encounter between terrorists and army personals. But she soon discovers that somethings are being purposely hidden and there’s some conspiracy going around.

The show is a treat to watch. Jennifer is a pure badass in this Alt Balaji web series. The story keeps you hooked at all times and the climax is really satisfying.
