One thing that we all can agree with is that this lock-down has made many people a binge-watcher. I know people who had not watched one Indian web series have now become experts in the matter.

Over the past few years, we have seen a rise in the number of web series production in India. There are tonnes of web series made in every genre possible. But one thing that excites people the most is thriller genre shows.

OTT platforms in India have created some of the very best thriller web series that can even go up against international shows. In this post, I will be sharing with you my list of 15 Best Thriller web series made to date in India.

1. Asur

  • Logline: Two forensic experts solving murder mysteries of a serial killer who kills for his religious belief.
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Voot
  • Cast:  Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti, Riddhi Dogra

This recent crime thriller by Voot has left the Indian audience stunned. Arshad Warsi making his web series debut in the best way possible acts as Dhananjay Rajput, a CBI officer who has been accused of his wife’s murder. The only man willing to help him is Nikhil Nair, a forensic expert. 

Soon Nikhil finds himself entangled with mysterious serial killings and the narrative of a high IQ serial killer kicks in.

The title has been justified to its best. The mythological theme, suspense, and the murder mysteries fuse to make one of the best Hindi web series of to date.

2. Paatal Lok

  • Logline: A story of a cop whose personal and professional life gets all messed up while solving a high profile case.

  • Cast: Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee

Justifying the mythological fearfulness of Patal Lok, a thriller series couldn’t get better than this. The show follows as a mystery simulator while showcasing the dark realities of Indian society.

The story revolves around Hathi Ram, a Delhi cop who is tasked to solve the attempted murder case of a well known political journalist. 

Four obvious suspects are too stubborn to reveal any information related to the planned killing making Hathi Ram dive deeper into the case revealing spine chilling stories of the suspects. Unable to connects the dots Hathi ram finds it difficult to handle his professional and personal life at the same time.

Every character in this adult web series seems believable. The show has a lot of cursing which fits well with the nature of the series. The thrill in the story is everlasting and the hype for season 2 is very real.

3. Breathe

  • Logline: A story of a father who decides to take drastic measures to save his dying kid.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Cast:  Madhavan, Amit Sadh, Sapna Pabbi

Amazon Prime’s Breathe will always be recalled as one of the most sensational thriller web series made in India. Making a complete show without any influential faces on the board requires some serious talent and an extraordinary storyline.

The story revolves around Danny and his son Josh who is suffering from serious lung disease and needs an immediate transplant. Josh is number four on the rundown to get another lung, however, he may not be able to survive till then. So Danny chooses to take extraordinarily brutal measures and kill each of the three patients before Josh in the benefactor’s line to spare his child.

The story is very powerful, enticing and rolls down smoothly through the episodes, Madhvan has done great acting along with all the other cast, the screenplay is tight and dialogue delivery is top-notch. Perfect for binge-watching.

4. Sacred Games

  • Logline: It’s a story of an honest Mumbai cop, Sartaj Singh, whose life takes a huge turn when he gets a call from an infamous gangster, Ganesh Gaitonde.

  • Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Neeraj Kabi, Aamir Bashir Radhika Apte

The series that changed the entire scene of Indian Web Series Industry needs no introduction. But if you are living on Moon the following description may be helpful. 

It’s a story of an honest Mumbai cop, Sartaj Singh, whose life flips upside down when he gets a call from an infamous gangster, Ganesh Gaitonde  dropping the most famous dialogue of 2018- “25 Din hai, bacha lena apne shehar ko.”

Tightly packed episodes backed by supreme acting, suspense, and over the top thrill make this a perfect delight to watch. The third season was expected to release by 2021 but may be rescheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

5. Mirzapur

  • Logline: A story about the power struggle between an Overlord and two rookie brothers. The winner gets Mirzapur, the city of crimes.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Cast: Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Faizal, Vikrant Messey

Taking over the internet with its hilarious dialogue memes, Mirzapur is just the right kind web series that justifies the Indian crime thriller genre. 

The story centers on two brothers Guddu and Babblu played by Ali Faisal and Vikrant Messey respectively who are caught up in the web of greed, power, and an ambition to rule over Mirzapur while serving the current overlord of Mirzapur Akhandanand Tripathi.

The show holds no bars and gets as exciting as it can. The show’s got a good story, powerful characters, strong language, and impactful scenes. What’s not there to like?

6. Special ops

  • Logline: A trial for the 2001 Parliament terror attach reveals a 6th unidentified terrorist is associated with the assault. Himmat Singh and his agents are on a mission to track him down.
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Hotstar
  • Cast:  Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Gautami Kapoor

Real-life crime thrillers have always been one of the favorite genres of the Indian audience. Now that Hotstar has emerged as the major OTT player in the market, real-life thriller web series like Special Ops have been well recognized and loved over the platform.

The show tries recreating the 2001 parliament attack from the viewpoint of an intelligence officer. Special ops follow the story of an intelligence office Himmat Singh who is determined to catch the mastermind involved in the attack. 

I wouldn’t mark it as rewatch worthy but it is by far the best espionage series made in India after Bard of Blood and you should definitely add this to your watchlist today. 

7. Smoke

  • Logline: A Gang rivalry among the drug lords from Goa settles at a huge cost of murders and violence.
  • Year: 2018
  • Platform: Eros Now
  • Cast: Jim Sarbh, Kalki Koechlin, Mandira Bedi

Crime thrillers have become a trend in the Indian digital content industry. Smoke is yet another web series that showcase a drug lord, crime mafia, and gang rivalries.

Set up in Goa, the show talks about a stubborn Russian psychopath who is insecure about his position as a crime mafia and drug lord. For starters, this web series may induce a sense of deja vu from Netflix’s best crime thriller, Sacred games as few faces are submerged into exact matching characters.

Except for a couple of pointless characters, the show has no disappointment and ties an ideal bunch between a fantastic crime thriller and an extraordinary performer on screen.

8. Criminal Justice

  • Logline: Aditya wakes up to find the woman he had a one night stand with is dead. All the pieces of evidence point towards him, but he doesn’t have a clue how everything happened.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Disney+ Hotstar
  • Cast: Vikrant Massey, Pankaj Tripathi, Rucha Inamdar

Criminal Justice is an adaptation from BBC series of the same name and promises to be a nail-biting murder mystery. The show is a fusion of Jail and Courtroom drama. 

It’s the story of a guy named Aditya, an MBA student who helps his family run a cab service. One day after dropping a girl, he realizes she has left her phone so he drives all the way back to return it. She then insists him to share some drinks and they end up spending a steamy night together. After waking up Aditya finds out that the lady has been brutally killed. What’s worse is that all the evidence is against him and he doesn’t remember a thing.

The story is a bit slow but acting is top-notch. The cinematography of this show is breathtaking. If you are into such type of dramas then it is worth watching.

9. RejctX

  • Logline: A group of youngsters determined to make it big in hip hop lands into various troubles.
  • Year: 2019
  • Platform: Zee5
  • Cast: Taranng Takrani, Kubbra Sait, Ridhi Khakhar

A two-season thriller web series that focuses on a bunch of high school friends passionate about rap and hip hop even though their roots don’t allow them to even think about going beyond their academics. 

But the story not just ends at that, it goes beyond to show the immature teenage minds and how their decisions land them in troubles.

Despite being a thriller web series, it has many different elements like romance, friendship, music that makes it a wholesome show.

10. Bose: Dead or Alive

  • Logline: An After Death mystery of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  • Year: 2017
  • Platform: Alt Balaji
  • Cast:  Rajkummar Rao, Naveen Kasturia, Edward Sonnenblick

Based on Anuj Dhar’s 2012 book India’s Biggest Cover-up, Bose Dead or Alive is a mini web series depicting the historical chronicles of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, his distinctive ideology of freedom and the controversies related to his death.

Despite his heroic daring and controversial deeds, Indian Cinema hasn’t tapped much into his life. Alt Balaji attempts to highlight his adventures and how he disappeared from history.

As an Indian, I feel that it is important that we all should know what happened to Netaji. I am not saying that the answers given in this series are correct but at least this series is making people curious about our history and freedom struggle. 

11. Byomkesh Bakshi

  • Logline: Chronicles of famous detective Bymokesh Bakshi.
  • Year: 1993
  • Platform: Amazon Prime
  • Cast: Rajit Kapur, K.K. Raina

Byomkesh Bakshi is an Indian-Bengali fictional detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay in 1932. Bymokesh Bakshi is equivalent to British fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

Byomkesh Bakshi is a very well known detective working in Kolkata. He along with his sidekick Ajit Kumar Banerji investigates spine chilling criminal cases. 

This show came at a time when people in Indian were not getting anything close to detective drama and thus it became a massive hit. Despite being the oldest thriller series on this list, it is no less than the others.

12. Powder

  • Logline: A story of a bitter rivalry between a drug kingpin and a police officer.
  • Year: 2010
  • Platform: Sonyliv
  • Cast: Pankaj Tripathi, Manish Choudhary, Jagat Rawat

I am sure many of you have not heard the name of the series before today. The reason for this is the lack of viewership it got at the time of its airing on Sony TV despite it being a great series.

The story revolves around two men Usman Malik and Naved Ansari. Usman is the head of NCB (Narcotics Control Bureau) and Naved is a Drug Kingpin in Mumbai. Both grew up in slums but took different paths. 

The show is filled with one of the best casts and the story is very captivating too. Plus, if you are a Pankaj Tripathi, then this show is a must-watch for you. 

13. 24

  • Logline: Jai Singh Rathod is tasked to foil a terrorist attack in just 24 hours.
  • Year: 2013
  • Platform: Voot
  • Cast: Anil Kapoor, Tisca Chopra, Mandira Bedi

A series based on an American Action-Thriller series of the same name.  The series first aired on Colours TV made with a budget of 100 crores. The show has two seasons and both can be watched on Voot App.

24 is a story revolving around an anti-terrorist squad officer Jai Singh Rathod who is tasked to foil a terrorist attack plan in just 24 hours and save the country. It is a 24 episodes series with a big star cast and a big budget.

14. Code M

  • Logline: A military lawyer is asked to investigate what seems to be just an open and shut case, but is it really that simple?
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Alt Balaji
  • Cast: Jennifer Winget, Tanuj Virwani, Kundan Roy 

Jennifer Winget is not an unknown name to the Indian audiences. She has been a famous face in Indian Television Dramas for years. This is her debut web series and that too a big one.

The story revolves around a military lawyer, Major Monika Mehra, who is ordered to investigate a case involving the encounter between terrorists and army personals. But she soon discovers that somethings are being purposely hidden and there’s some conspiracy going around.

The show is a treat to watch. Jennifer is a pure badass in this Alt Balaji web series. The story keeps you hooked at all times and the climax is really satisfying. 

15. Illegal 

  • Logline: A story of an idealistic lawyer who gets caught between the not-so-perfect judicial system of our country but is determined to get justice for her clients.
  • Year: 2020
  • Platform: Voot
  • Cast: Neha Sharma, Akshay Oberoi, Piyush Mishra 

There are very few courtroom dramas created in India and ‘Illegal’ definitely set the bar very high for future web series that’ll release in the same genre. 

Niharika is an ambitious lawyer who is kicked out of her firm for raising her voice against her colleague been raped by a superior. She then joins a new law firm where she gets the case of a woman who is convicted for the crime of killing her family and is due to be hanged soon. Juggling through all the professional and personal problems, Niharika goes to all ends to find justice.

This thriller web series for the major part keeps its audience hooked to what’s going on in the story. Certain sections are stretched a bit but overall this Voot Original is a good treat for Indian web series lovers.
